Sopo Kashakashvili

Sopo Kashakashvili is a cross-disciplinary artist, cultural facilitator, and educator whose work moves fluidly between performance, video, music, sculpture, drawing, and text. She graduated with honors from Bard College Berlin (B.A. in Humanities, Arts, and Social Thought) and from the Städelschule, Frankfurt am Main, where she studied with Judith Hopf and guest professor Flaka Haliti.

Kashakashvili’s practice—often referred to as ‘social constellations’—brings together immersive installations and performances that explore how identity, migration, and collective memory shape modes of coexistence. Her works examine the systems that organize, and at times destabilize, social life, investigating how bodies navigate structures of care, belonging, and power.

Growing up in what is often termed post-Soviet Georgia, she engages deeply with the layered colonial narratives attached to the Caucasus, Central Asia, and Eastern Europe. Through this lens, she traces connections across former Soviet territories while searching for ways of reimagining and reclaiming cultural identity.

Her site-specific works often begin with the history of a place, integrating archival and documentary research through conversations, interviews, and field recordings. Within her visual language, the recurring presence of red functions as both a connective thread and a symbolic register of emotion, intimacy, and resistance.

In recent projects, Kashakashvili has turned toward personal(family) and collective archives to reveal untold or fragmented herstories. In recent works, she has been working with family archives and unfolding untold histories, lost narratives or fragmented her(stories). Similar to her ongoing work Otherhood, which transforms oral histories of caregivers and migrant mothers, into installations, performances, and an evolving video opera in five acts. She collaborates regularly with artist Larry Bonćhaka and is an active member of the collective commune6x3. Together with Bonćhaka, she is currently developing La Caoba, a long-term land restoration and community project in Prampram, Ghana.
